Creighton University Athletics – Vontz Leads Men’s Golf To 11th Place Finish in Spring Opener

ST. GEORGE, Utah — Sophomore Nate Vontz fired a season-low 67 in the second round to help Creighton men’s golf to an 11th-place finish at the Pizza Hut Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational on Tuesday.

Vontz followed up his opening-round 78 with a 67 in the second round, tied for the best score of any competitor in the field in Tuesday’s second round, to tie for 15th place. It was his lowest round in collegiate competition as a Bluejay for the Lincoln native.

Koy Potthoff led CU with a 74 in the opening round and followed that with a 77. His 151 aggregate tied him for 30th place overall.

Tucker Knaak fired consecutive 77s to tie for 42nd place, while Bradley Keyer (81-89=170, 69th) and Andrew McCormick (90-85=175, 71st) rounded out the CU competitors.

Northern Colorado won the 11-team meet by one stroke over Middle Tennessee State with a 572 aggregate. MTSU’s Cooper Sears and Southern Utah’s Jake Vincent shared medalist honors with a 138 total.

The meet featured 71 competitors and 11 teams on the Par 72 Sunbrook Golf Club course that measured 6,900 yards.

Creighton returns to the course on March 11-12 at the Twin Oaks Intercollegiate in Springfield, Mo.
